Eric Carle Study

Ms. Lizzie's literacy group is studying Eric Carle. This week we created illustrations that inspired writing. Here are a few peices!

Catherine used painted paper, tissue paper and water colors, just like Eric Carle!

We are going to continue using art to inspire writing, so look for more illustrations to come!

Map It Out, Geography!

Ms. Flynn's social studies group (Nadia, Robin, Rebekah, Sean, Lindy, Will, Eric, Timothy, and Maggie) is studying Geography. We are beginning our study with maps. We are talking about directions (north, south, east and west), legends/symbols, and how to create maps. Later, we are going to be looking at making a map of Stephens using directions, looking at World maps, state maps, and landforms.
At home, you can talk about directions or what way you are traveling in the car.
We taught the younger students how to remember North, South, East and West.

It All Adds Up!

Ms. Flynn's math group (Alec, Ben, Molly, Alex, Reece, Nicole, Manny, Jeannie, Kedzie, and Will) has started studying measurement in math. We are going to be looking at conventional and unconventional measuring methods. Our first project is going to be measuring how tall we are with different units and making "paper people." We will then move into conversions and measuring different items with unconventional methods.

BOOM! POW! COMICS!

Ms. Flynn's literacy group (Alec, Ben, Molly, Alex, Reece, Nicole, Manny, and Jeannie) have begun a comic book study in literacy. We are looking at what makes comics memorable, how to make characters stand out, and how to choose characters. We are also comparing different authors' styles who have written about the same character, like Spiderman. Students will be creating their own comics during literacy and publishing them at the end with their own artwork.
At home, if you receive a newspaper, go through comics with your child. If they find one they enjoy, feel free to have them bring it in to share.

Weather Showcase

Beginning next week we will be showcasing the elementary student's work from our weather unit. They have been learning all about weather and then chose an area they wanted to know more about. Through these topics they inquired, researched and then made visuals. These visuals will be displayed in the sun room and above the cubbies. We invite parents to come in and view what they have learned. This is at anytime during our school day and you're welcome to have your child give you a tour when you come by!
